Two staff members of the News Daily and Daily Herald have combined to win three awards in the Georgia Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest 2003.

Photographer Bill Yoder won second place in the Sports Photograph category for his photo of Jonesboro High School volleyball player Kathleen Williams stretching out for the ball during a match against Mt. Zion High School. The photo appeared in the Sept. 4, 2002 edition.

Staff writer Justin Reedy won first place in the Serious Column category for his opinion pieces on homosexuality, the debate over the Iraq war, and the government's questionable policies regarding civil liberties in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He also won third place in the Hard News Writing category for his stories on the Consolidated Freightways shutdown, a dispute between local residents and an area rock quarry, and the struggle of government agencies and businesses trying to communicate with the area's growing Hispanic population.
