Jonesboro stays undefeated with a pair of sweeping wins

The Jonesboro Lady Cardinals volleyball team kept its area and overall record perfect Tuesday afternoon with a pair of victories.

Jonesboro (8-0, 4-0) beat both Warner Robins and Morrow.

Both wins came in the form of a sweep. Against Warner Robins, the Cardinals won 25-6, 25-4, and 25-13.

The Lady Cardinals also knocked off Morrow 25-21, 25-17, and 25-16.

Lake Dow wins opening matches

The Lake Dow Christian Academy volleyball team opened its volleyball season Tuesday afternoon with a victory against Grace Christian of Columbia.

Lake Dow (25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 24-26 and 15-7) relied several key plays from several members of its team.

Lydia Ham and Heidi Reagan finished with nine spikes, Mallorie Malloy had four.

Luella nets first ever area victory

The Luella volleyball team, a new school in Henry County, beat both Banneker and Therrell High School in its area volleyball openers.

The Lady Lions defeated Baneker 25-14, 15-25, 8-25, 25-21 and 15-8.

Against Therrell, the squad won 25-11, 25-4 and 25-7.

Lovejoy defeats

Mundy's Mill for

first diamond win

The Lovejoy Lady Wildcats softball team won for the first time this season, defeating rival Mundy's Mill 14-0 in a game called after five innings.

Barber Baker pitched the shutout and struckout 12 batters.

Offensively Katie Vickers was 4-for-4.

Lovejoy returns to the diamond Thursday afternoon against Mt. Zion.

Stockbridge holds off rivals

The Stockbridge Lady Tigers scored one run in the first inning and that was enough as they held on to defeat Eagle's Landing 1-0 Tuesday.

Stockbridge's Jennifer Corbin led off the game by getting hit by a hit. She stole second and made it to third off a wild pitch.

With one out, Drue Longo smacked a double to drive in Corbin.

"We made some mistakes but kind of escaped and scored that run in the first inning," Stockbridge head coach Randy Stracner said. "Tara did an excellent job tonight and had good defense to back her up. We played tough defense and that's what won the game tonight."

It was a pitcher's duel between Stockbridge's Tara Gober and Eagle's Landing's Terri Mesko. Gober struck out five and walked one while Mesko struck out 10, walked one and hit one batter to take the loss.

Stockbridge and Eagle's Landing collected four hits each.

Lady Wolverines

take easy victory

The Union Grove Lady Wolverines trounced Crim 17-0 in five innings Tuesday in Area 5-AA play.

Megan Escue pitched for Union Grove, striking out five while walking one and allowing one hit. She also went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Natalie Crews paced Union Grove by going 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs and three RBIs.

Other players who contributed to the effort included Amy Dumas (1-for-2, one run), Brandi Pratt (1-for-3, two runs, one RBI), Elizabeth Hawkins (3-for-4, two runs), Jennifer Neville (two runs), Lauren Peters (1-for-1, one RBI, one run), Amber Eberhart (2-for-3, one run, two RBIs), Lindsey Hopkins (2-for-3, two runs) and Brooke King (1-for-3, two RBIs).

Crim committed 10 errors.
