A woman was led away from the Little Mountain Condominiums and golf course near the Rockdale County line Monday in tears as police investigated the scene where a body was discovered just a few hours earlier.
In a wooded area between the backyard of a row of town homes and Ga. Highway 155, two men discovered the body of a man that may have been missing from Rockdale County for several weeks, neighbors said. They said the woman who was brought to speak with investigators was the missing man's mother.
Police did not release any information about the identity of the body. Maj. M.L. Brooks of Henry County police said the incident is being investigated as a homicide until they discover it was not. Police would not specify the race, age or cause of death.
"That's all still under investigation," said Henry County Bureau of Police Services Lt. Joe Tammaro.
Tammaro said the body was discovered by "one of the construction workers working on the town homes." Police were called to the area shortly before 1 p.m. Monday, Tammaro said.
Neil Weilnau of Ohio was one of the men to see the body, but he said he didn't see much.
"We didn't get very close, I can tell you, but we got close enough to tell it was a body," he said.
Weilnau said he has been visiting a friend that lives in the row of town homes behind which the body was discovered. He said someone working to patch up a leaky roof led him to the area where they saw the body, just yards into the woods.
As the investigation continued Monday, detectives from Rockdale County were called to try to determine if the body was the missing person reported out of Rockdale County, but there was no word Monday afternoon on the body's identification.
Detectives on the scene said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Crime Scene Unit was called in to investigate because of the decomposition of the body.
