Former Mt. Zion player J.R. McNair is one game away from playing in the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game.
McNair is a starting fullback for the Wofford Terriers, who will be playing in the Division I-AA semifinals this Saturday at Delaware. The game will be on ESPN2 with the kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
Last week in Wofford's victory over Western Kentucky, McNair gained 88 yards. McNair has gained 606 yards this season and leads the team in rushing touchdowns with 11. He also leads the Southern Conference in scoring.
In October, McNair tied Wofford and Southern Conference single-game records with five rushing touchdowns in a 42-12 victory over Chattanooga. He gained 126 yards and was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week.
McNair isn't just doing well on the football field at Wofford.
He's involved in numerous activities and is the school's student body president.
He's carrying a 3.64 GPA while majoring in philosophy.
"We're people," McNair said. "Football, that's a big part of the college experience but it's not all of it."
McNair is a 2000 Mt. Zion High School graduate and was on the 1999 team that went 14-1 and finished runner-up in Class AAA.
McNair gained 1,691 rushing yards that season, which ranks fourth on the all-time single-season Clayton County list.
McNair was also a two-time state champion wrestler at Mt. Zion.
