A section of Loop Road from ASR Road to Riverdale Road will be permanently closed Saturday for construction of a taxiway that will run to the planned fifth runway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Traffic will instead have to use Interstate 285, Sullivan Road or go around the other side of Loop Road, said Jeff Matarko, Clayton County transportation engineer.
Matarko said Loop Road is mainly used by the airport for transporting cargo, not for regular traffic.
"We don't expect that it will affect traffic that much," he said. The airport has spent the last few months preparing cargo transporters for the closing of the road, Matarko said.
Sullivan Road re-opened for traffic two weeks ago after closing for construction of the fifth runway. In January, Matarko said the airport will also have to shift lanes on Interstate-285 for construction.
The entire construction of the airport's fifth runway is scheduled to be completed in 2006.
