Local teams gearing up for Tiger Classic tourney

The Henry County Warhawks could come away with their second tournament championship in a row this weekend at the Tiger Classic.

Last weekend, the Warhawks wrestling team won the South Metro Invitational in convincing fashion, placing 12 wrestlers in the top six.

Henry County goes into this week's tournament ranked No. 4 in Class AAAAA

"We have to be considered the favorites but it's going to be a tough tournament," Henry County head coach Marty Hutsell.

In last week's tournament, three Warhawks wrestlers won their divisions including Chad Kellett (103 pounds), Brett Warrington (125) and Mac Daniel (189).

The Tiger Classic tournament features two other state-ranked teams including Troup County (No. 7, Class AAAA) and Dublin (No. 2, Class AA). Troup County is the defending Tiger Classic champion.

Stockbridge, the host team, finished fourth in last year's tournament. Stockbridge placed 10th in the South Metro and split a pair of dual matches Tuesday. The Tigers beat Columbia 42-35 but lost to Redan 36-34.

"We are still banged up and we also had guys out due to exams but we are plugging along," Stockbridge head coach Don Williams said. "Our fearsome foursome are out until January, Brad Oglesby, 125, Russell Johnson, 130, Paul Johnson, 145 and Paul Adair, 215. We did pretty good without them. We were also missing Jimmy Davis, 215 backup and Eric Bryant, 103 due to exams. I told the guys that because of exams that they could miss tonight to that they could study."

Some standouts on the Stockbridge team this year include Brandon Brown with a record of 15-5), Stephen Wentzel (17-3), Brad Oglesby (9-4), Daniel Suwinski (15-4), Patrick Jackson (14-34), Chase Balkom (10-5), Phillip Gable (11-7) and Paul Allis (10-8).

Eagle's Landing will also be wrestling in the tournament. The Golden Eagles finished eighth at South Metro with four wrestling placing in the top six. Drew Glenn finished first in the 215-pound division for the Golden Eagles.

Three Clayton teams, Jonesboro, Lovejoy and Morrow, will wrestle at the Tiger Classic.

Other teams wrestling in the tournament include Cedar Grove, Columbia, Dunwoody, Groves, Lithonia, McNair, Newton County, North Atlanta, Peachtree Ridge, Redan, Rockdale County, Salem, Shiloh, Southwest DeKalb, Spalding, Stephenson, Tift County, Tri-Cities and Westlake.
