The Clayton County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will commemorate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1.
The NAACP will host its Annual Jubilee Day Services at Dixon Grove Baptist Church on Fielder Road in Jonesboro.
Dexter Matthews, president of the Clayton County branch, said the services will begin at 10 a.m. and Georgia Assistant Secretary of State Terrell Slayton will be the guest speaker.
Matthews said the service will be similar to a church service and should last between an hour and a half and two hours.
"(The speech) will probably be about freedom and civil rights," he said. "The entire event will celebrate freedom for African Americans."
The event was originally scheduled to be at Harvesttime Apostolic Church in Riverdale, but was changed because Matthews said the organization wanted to schedule the event where it had not been held before.
"We try to move around to different parts of the county and get people all over to come out," he said.
Matthews said the NAACP is expecting anywhere from 50 to 100 people to attend the event.
"It varies every year," he said.
For more information, Matthews said residents can contact the NAACP at (404) 361-3235.
