CCSU's Byrd named MVP

Clayton College & State University was the only two game winner in the Wachovia/Southern Orthopaedic Holiday Classic hosted by the school and had a trio of players named to the "Stars of the Classic," including the event's most valuable player.

Senior guard Jason Byrd was the named the Classic's MVP after leading the team to a 65-50 win over Johnson C. Smith on Monday.

Byrd scored three of his team-high 13 points on a three-point play late in the game to give the Lakers a double-digit lead, en route to the 15-point victory.

He hit 5-of-6 from the field in the win and to go along with five assists and four rebounds. Byrd had 10 points five assists and five rebounds in the team's 82-67 win over Albany State on Sunday.

In addition to Byrd, Clayton State had two other players named "Stars of the Classic," as senior forward Craig Butts (Savannah, GA) and junior forward B.J. Puckett (Auburn, GA) were named to the team.

State University of West Georgia senior forward Jonathan James (Sacramento, CA) and senior guard Germayne Forbes (London, England), Johnson C. Smith University sophomore forward John Fulton (Manning, S.C.) and freshman guard Jerome Givens (Versailles, KY) and Albany State University guard Flem Tucker (Louisville, GA) and center Nick Wallery (Deland, FL) were also named to the team.

Butts had 14 points and seven rebounds in the team's win over Albany State and 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the victory over J.C. Smith. Puckett scored a team-high 17 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds in the ASU game.

James had 27 points and 15 rebounds in West Georgia's 98-96 double overtime loss to J.C. Smith on Sunday, while Forbes poured in 26 points in the team's 74-72 win over Albany State and 16 points in the J.C. Smith game.

For J.C. Smith, Givens scored 29 points and had seven assists and three steals to lead the Golden Bulls to the win over West Georgia, while Fulton had 14 points and nine rebounds against West Georgia, followed by 19 points to lead the squad in the loss against Clayton State. Albany State's Flem Tucker had a game-high 24 points and six assists in the team's loss to Clayton State and 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the team's two-point loss to West Georgia.
