Forest Park Athletics building bright future

By Doug Gorman

When David Askew decided to coach his son's 11-12-year old baseball team, he had to pratically build it from scratch.

So with the help of assistant coaches Kelly Babb and Charles West, the Forest Park Athletics were born just weeks before the start of the season.

It turned out to be a banner season for the 11-year-old baseball team despite barely having enough players to field a whole team.

"Thee were times when I wondered if we were going to have to forfeit," said David Askew, who served as the head coach.

The Athletics ended the regular-season second in the park standings, and fourth in an eight team travel league.

At the recently completed American Amateur Baseball Congress 11-12 state tournament, the Athletics were eliminated from the competition after suffering two straight losses.

On Tuesday night, Kelvin Tanner and B.J. Culver each hit three-run homers, but the squad lost 17-6 to the Shiloh Lobos.

On Wednesday, the team lost 11-2 to the Browns Mill Yankees.

Sean Stringfellow and B.J. Culver each pitched for the Astros, and Byron Graham ripped a solo homer in the loss.

Dangelo Fagin, Derrell Askew, Coody Fooshie, Charles West, Drexel Copeland, Marvin Taylor, Keano Babb and Anthony Barnett all contributed to the team.

However, the season isn't over just yet for the Athletics. The squad has been invited to the AABC 11-year-old single-age World Series in Brooklyn next month.

"We are trying to have fund-raisers to help with our expenses to the World Series," Askew said.

When the team returns from the World Series, there is more baseball in store for the team.

The Athletics are already planning to take part in a Fall league.

Askew said he has big plans for the Athletics in the future.

"We plan to stay together as we progress through the age-brackets," he said. "At least until they get to high school."
