Virgil L. Upton

Virgil L. Upton, 73, of Stockbridge, formerly of Key Largo, Fla., died July 11, 2003, at the Christian Ministries Hospice in Griffin.

He was born Feb. 23, 1930, in Miami, Fla., the son of the late Mamie Toney and Clarence Upton. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and a retired supply and control clerk for Eastern Air Lines.

Upton was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Velma Cates Upton, and brother, Harold Upton. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Birdie G. Parker-Upton; children, Donald and Florence Upton of Bulverda, Texas, Lisa and Eric Wishe of Sugarloaf Key, Fla.; grandchildren, Gerri Wishe, Katie Upton and Marc Wishe; sisters, Mildred Salter of Senoia, Myrtle Hockaday of Morriston, Fla., Martha Taylot of Bessemer City, N.C., Linda Pendt of McDonough and Darlene West of McDonough; brother, Leonard Upton of Morriston, Fla.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough with the Rev. George Worrell and the Rev. Hinton Harris officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Park in Miami on Thursday, July 17, 2003. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Betty Ann Johnson

Betty Ann Johnson, 55, of Stockbridge, died July 12, 2003, at her residence. She was born Nov. 27, 1947, in Sharpsburg and was a member of Emanuel Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl and Kenneth Albert, and Michelle Johnson, both of Stockbridge; mother, Minnie Vasser of Locust Grove; brothers, William Vasser of Jonesboro, Gene Vasser of Gadsden, Ala., Russell Vasser of Mudrow, Okla., Lamar Vasser of Boaz, Ala., Marty Vasser and Steve Vasser, both of Locust Grove, Ted Vasser of Toccoa, Jerry Vasser of Locust Grove; sister, Charlotte Falls of Stockbridge; grandchildren, Christopher and Ashley Johnson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, from the chapel of Cannon-Cleveland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Johnny Newell officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Jonesboro. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Susan Ann Waters DeBald

Susan Ann Waters DeBald, 59, of Locust Grove, died July 12, 2003. She was born Sept. 21, 1943, in Chatham County, the daughter of the late Lucille Burnett Hurst and Carl John Waters.

Susan and her husband Frenchie were the former owners of Luella Junction Bar-B-Que. She was preceded in death by a son, William G. Aldrich Jr., in 1990. Survivors are her husband, Edward "Frenchie" DeBald of Locust Grove; children, Deborah Aldrich and Mike Aldrich of Locust Grove, Sharon Cenicola of Griffin, Sandy Jennings of Savannah and Ralph Reed of LaGrange; sister, Georgia Evelyn Bragg of South Guyton; brothers, Edward Waters of Savannah and Charlie Waters of South Guyton; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Burdett officiating. Interment will be at Berea Cemetery in Hampton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Velma Lois

Jackson Tingle

Velma Lois Jackson Tingle, 87, of McDonough, died July 13, 2003. She was a homemaker and a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bonard Lewis Tingle, and sister, Jennie Lou Graves. Survivors are her children, Geraldine and Lanier Wilkerson of McDonough, and Lourene and Larry Greer of Milner; grandchildren, Danny Wilkerson, Keith Greer, Kam Greer and Debby Mercer; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home of McDonough with the Rev. Joey Seabolt and the Rev. Oscar Walker officiating. Interment will be in Haisten/Eastlawn Memorial Park in McDonough. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.
