Shutout was the word of the day as the homestanding Jonesboro Cardinals and the Morrow-Lake City Chargers were both blanked by their opponents in AABC Mickey Mantle (15-16) State baseball playoff action Friday at Jonesboro High.
The tournament continues this weekend through Sunday.
East Paulding Raiders 8, Jonesboro Cardinals 0: Raiders pitcher Jeff May pitched a complete-game, one-hitter, helping East Paulding blank the Cardinals 8-0 Friday evening.
May also had six strikeouts in the contest, giving up a single to Cardinals second baseman Brett Stuart.
The score was only 3-0 until the late in the game, when East Paulding had a five run inning to blow the game open.
Frankie Crawley pitched a complete game for Jonesboro, giving up eight hits and striking out six.
Jonesboro drops to 1-1 in the double-elimination tournament and will face Henry County today at noon.
Jonesboro outfielder Harold Walker was disappointed that his team couldn't hit like they did earlier in the tourney, when they beat an opponent 15-5.
He said the team's bats "weren't alive at all" on Friday.
"We took East Paulding kind of lightly and our defense wasn't good behind Frankie, who pitched well," said Walker, a rising junior. "We've got to be ready to hit against Henry County it's do or die."
Fayette Gold 5, Morrow-Lake City Chargers 0: Fayette's Dan Cooper pitched another gem from a visiting pitcher Friday night, holding the Chargers to two hits in a 5-0 win for the Gold.
Cooper pitched a complete game, striking out eight Chargers. He also helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-4 in the contest.
Chargers pitcher Brandon Rice gave up five runs on five hits. Rice and second baseman Jarrett Andrews had the only hits for Morrow-Lake City.
