Mt. Zion football coach Jackie Green had high hopes a year ago as his team prepared for the 2002 season. A 5-5 record, and some heartbreaking losses, kept the Bulldogs out of the playoffs. It hasn't dampened Green's hopes this year as the Bulldogs enter summer weight lifting in preparation for the season opener against Lovejoy on September 12. "We aren't going to be involved in a passing league or anything like that," Green said. "We will be weight lifting and throwing against a team every now and then this summer." For the past several seasons, the Bulldogs have been known for their enormous offensive lines. This year, the Bulldogs will again be big up front, just experienced. Guard JaShan Powell is the only returning interior lineman. "We are going to have to grow up pretty fast," Green said. Mt. Zion returns most of their skilled positions on both sides of the ball. Green is hoping the momentum from spring practice carries over the upcoming season. The Bulldogs had 65 players come out for spring practice. "I'm pleased with our numbers," he said. "I hope we have as many come back out when we start practicing for real."More like this story
