Davies pitches in All-Star contest

Stockbridge's Kyle Davies pitched one inning for the South team in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game held Tuesday in Lexington, Ky.

Davies allowed a home run and a walk but struck out one batter. The South team lost to the North squad 3-2.

Davies plays for the Atlanta Braves single-A affiliate in Rome and is 6-3 so far this year.

He is ranked fifth in the South Atlantic League in strikeouts with 88. In 15 starts this season, he has pitched 77 innings, has an ERA of 3.26 and has walked just 31 batters.

Davies is a 2001 Stockbridge High School graduate and helped lead the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the Class AAAAA state baseball tournament.

nFormer Eagle's Landing standout Matt Murton hasn't signed with the Boston Red Sox organization yet, according to his family.

Murton was picked in the first round by the Red Sox in this year's amateur draft.

Murton had just completed his junior year at Georgia Tech and was considered one of the top prospects going into this year's draft.

Post 33 takes on Loganville

The Stockbridge American Legion Post 33 baseball team will face a tough task Tuesday.

Post 33 will travel to Loganville for a 6:30 p.m. contest. This season, Loganville has emerged as one of the top American Legion teams in the area and state.

"Loganville is stacked," Post 33 head coach James Powell said.

Post 33 enters the contest with a 5-1 overall record and is 4-1 in region play.

Post 33 swept Covington Thursday in a doubleheader (7-4, 7-2).

In the first game, Scott Mayo, from Union Grove, started and worked four innings. Henry County's Josh Cole pitched three innings in relief.

Offensive standouts from the game included Union Grove's Clint Neville and Bible Baptist's Craig Maddux.

"They played super good again," Powell said.

It was the Bobby Donahue show in game 2. Donahue, from Stockbridge, pitched a complete game and struck out eight as a scout from Columbus State was in attendance.

"He was throwing an excellent game," Powell said. "Good things came out of that."

On Wednesday, Post 33 will travel to Conyers Post 77. On July 10, Post 33 will play host to Conyers for a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. On July 12, Post 33 will play Loganville in a home doubleheader at 2 p.m. Post 33 plays its home games at Union Grove High School.

The Stockbridge Post 33 team includes players from several area high schools including Henry County, Union Grove, Stockbridge, Eagle's Landing Christian, Morrow and Bible Baptist.
