Girls win district, boys take second

Battling muddy field conditions, a steady rain and District 27-4A opponents, the Boerne cross country teams prevailed and ran to three first-place and one second-place finish at the district meet held on the BHS campus Saturday morning.

"It was a good day for all our kids," BHS cross country coach Dave Fulkerson said, "but we have to give Fredericksburg's boys credit for an excellent race."

It was the Battlin' Billies boys team that kept the Greyhounds from making it a clean sweep.

The BHS varsity girls and both JV teams took first, while the Hound boys placed second behind Fredericksburg.

Both JV teams turned in perfect scores of 15 to win their respective races.

The Greyhounds advanced to the regionals to be held at UTSA this Saturday.

Varsity Girls

Jessie Smith (2nd, 13:00); Jenny DuPriest (6th, 13:20); Meredith Middleton (7th, 13:28); Hannah Williams (8th, 13:30) and Anne Blalock (9th, 13:32); Krista Maenius (10th, 13:33) and Julie Graham (14th, 14:21) all finished within the top 14 spots.

Boerne's top five racked up 32 points for first.

Varsity Boys

Fredericksburg claimed first and second in the race to edge out Boerne by three points (37-34) for first overall.

Jacob Wells had the best finish for the Greyhounds coming in 4th overall with a 16:11.

Josh Mycock (5th, 16:19); Joel Benavides (7th, 16:31); Andrew Cashion (10th, 16:46); Ryan Mack (11th, 16:48); David Stroman (12th, 16:57) and Erik Thormaehlen (13th, 17:08) rounded out the boys team.

Fulkerson said he would have liked for the boys to have won, but added he is looking at the bigger picture of state and regional.

"We've been focusing on the next two weeks and will be working to be back at Round Rock (state meet) in two weeks," he added.

JV Girls

Total domination is the best way to describe how the Boerne JV girls performed in the race.

The Lady Hounds claimed 14 of the top 20 spots, including the top nine to roll to an easy first.

A team can enter as many runners as it wishes in a given cross country race, but only the top five scores count in the team total.

Since BHS claimed the top five in the JV race, it is considered a perfect score at 15.

Stephanie Dillard (14:12), Charlene Herber (14:16), Marie Herbst (14:51), Pam Wilson (14:54) and Ashley Baum (15:09) took first through fifth.

JV Boys

The JV boys were just as dominant, placing 11 runners in the top 21 spots. The top five BHS boys also claimed a perfect score of 15.

The top five BHS finishers were Evan Tingle (17:02), Joel Williams (17:17), Taylor Hanssen (17:26), David Wilson (18:05) and Evan LaBlanc (18:36).
