Red-hot Jonesboro teams set for return to soccer field tonight

By Doug Gorman

The Jonesboro Cardinals varsity soccer teams are coming off two emotional wins against Area 2-AAAAA rival Stockbridge on Tuesday.

Now, after a quick turnaround, both teams return to action tonight at home in an area meet against Westside Macon.

In Tuesday night's boys' action, the Cardinals participated in one of the more physical games of the season as two Stockbridge players were ejected after receiving two yellow cards each.

Trailing 2-1 midway through the second half, the Cardinals scored three second-half goals en route to the region win.

Brad Martin was the offensive catalyst for the Cardinals scoring three goals. It was his second hat trick of the season.

Martin now has 15 goals for the Cardinals.

The win improved the Cardinals record to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Jonesboro should have the upper hand into tonight's game against visiting Westside. The Seminoles come into the game trying to shake off a five-game losing streak. Westside has given up 21 in its last two games.

According to Martin, the Cardinals aren't looking for an easy game just because Westside is struggling.

"I hope we come out and respond just like we did against Stockbridge. That what I'm expecting us to do."

Martin doesn't expect an easy game just because Westide is struggling.

"We don't know a whole lot about them, but we expect them to be hungry. Our coach keeps remind us not to look past them."

The Jonesboro girls also seem to be on a roll. The Lady Cardinals scored two quick goals in the first 11 minutes of Tuesday's game against Stockbridge, then held off the Lady Tigers attempt at a rally.

Amanda and Val Traber hooked up for the first goal in the win against Stockbridge. Michelle Lueke scored the second goal of the day on a header.

Laura Harris turned away nine shots en route to the win.

The Westside girls are also struggling with a 1-4 overall record. The Lady Seminoles dropped a 7-0 decision to Stockbridge in their only area contest of the season.

In other action tonight. Riverdale takes on Mt. Zion in a girls game at 5:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion.

Warner Robins plays Morrow at Tara Stadium starting at 5:30 p.m..
