The Jonesboro boys and girls tennis teams fought through the rain Monday afternoon to open the first-round of the Class AAAAA state tennis tournament at Lovejoy Park.

In the end, only the girls completed their matches, as Lee County knocked out the Lady Cardinals 3-0.

The Jonesboro boys will return to the courts at 9 a.m. today to complete one singles match and the No. 2 doubles match.

Lee County won all of its singles matches in straight sets to advance to the second round of the Class AAAAA state tournament.

"I didn't know too much about Lee County, but I got of thought they were going to be a tough team," said Jonesboro head coach Jeanine Conkle.

In No. 1 singles, Tam Nguyen lost 6-0, 6-1. Laura McMillian held her own in the first set before falling 6-3, 6-0.

The Jonesboro boys still have a chance to advance to the second round depending on what happens when action resumes this morning.

Manny Cortez, who plays No. 1 singles for Jonesboro, rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Nick Wilkinson lost 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles Nick Griffin and Dusty Landrum fell 6-0, 6-1.

Jonesboro's Daniel Banke split the first two sets of his match. The Cardinals' No. 2 singles player lost 6-2, but then won 6-3 before the rains postponed the final set. Banke will resume is action today.
