CCSU golf team in sixth after first round

Clayton College & State University freshman Jason Armour fired a first round 75 to lead the Lakers to sixth place after the first round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Monday at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee in Greensboro.

The Lakers shot a team score of 307 on the par 72, 6,832-yard course.

Top-ranked and Peach Belt Conference foe the University of South Carolina Aiken took a commanding first round lead, shooting a 1-under par 287 and is 11 shots ahead of the field.

Second round of the NCAA Division II Regional will continue on Tuesday, followed by the final 18 holes on Wednesday.

Behind Aiken, Armstrong Atlantic State University and Columbus State University are tied for second at 296, followed by Georgia College & State University and Francis Marion University tied for fourth at 300.

Clayton State sits in sixth in front of Presbyterian College, 309; and Kennesaw State University, 315.

Armour, a freshman from Raymond, IL, shot the second best round of his young career and is currently tied for 17th in the event. After getting off to a slow start, shooting a 40 on the front nine, he came back with 1-under par 35 on the back nine.

Behind Armour, senior Brennan Cass and junior Jess Shirley each shot a 77 in the first round of play and are tied for 22nd. Cass shot a 38 on the front, followed by a 39 on the back nine, while Shirley shot 39 on the front and 38 on the back.

Senior Bob Guiendon (Warner Robins, GA) and freshman Jimmy Beebe (Peachtree City, GA) each shot a first round 78 and are tied for 27th. Guiendon and Beebe each shot a 39 on the front and back nines.

Armstrong Atlantic State University's Nick Cowper leads the event after shooting a three-under par 69 in the first round. USC Aiken follows in second place at two-under par 70, one shot ahead of Carson Newman's Matthew Cram-Smith and Aiken's Bryan Sangid.
