Holloway signs basketball scholarship

By Jeffery Armstrong

North Clayton Eagles' senior basketball player DeKoven Holloway comes from athletic stock n his mother Deonne played volleyball and basketball put while his father Thomas was a star football player.

The 6-foot-7 Holloway's good genes and his basketball skills have allowed him to go to college, as he signed a letter of intent last Friday to play college basketball at Coastal Georgia Community College in Brunswick in the fall.

"I am glad to be able to go to college," Holloway said. "I plan to work hard, especially on my ball handling and my left hand, and do the things that made me successful here at North Clayton."

Holloway was a big presence at North Clayton during the 2002-03 basketball season, averaging 15 points and eight rebounds per game. He also was the leading shot blocker in Region 4-AAAA, averaging 2 ? to 3 blocks per game. North Clayton head coach Michael White said Holloway also led the team in double-doubles.

"I think DeKoven has a chance to be an impact player in college if he works hard and is consistent," said White. "He has the desire to go further and I think he made a good choice for the start of his collegiate career. I look forward to seeing him play."

Holloway's parents hovered around him while he was talking about his future and they couldn't help but be proud of their son's accomplishment. They told stories of how he would play basketball all day until the street lights came on. Once, he even missed dinner because he played a little too long.

"I feel great that he is getting the opportunity to do what he wants to do," said Thomas. "DeKoven enjoys playing ball and now he's got the chance to do that in college."

"I'm very happy n DeKoven's worked hard the whole year and he deserves what he's getting," said Deonne.

"He's a good man, a good student and a good athlete."

Coastal Georgia assistant coach James Frey said Holloway has a great opportunity to do well at the school with hard work, especially on his jump shot. "We plan to play him at the small forward spot, so he's got to be able to shoot," said Frey.

Frey also said Holloway has the winning personality and the good home life to be a success.

"You can never go wrong recruiting good kids," Frey said.
