The Union Grove Wolverines are going to the second round of the Class AA state baseball tournament.
The Wolverines advanced to round 2 after beating Buford 15-0 in game 3 Monday at Eagle's Landing High School. The contest was called in the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. Union Grove won game 1 Saturday 4-1 but Buford forced a third game after winning 8-7 in 10 innings in game 2.
Union Grove travels to Adairsville for a best-of-three series beginning Wednesday. Game 1 is tentatively set for 1 p.m.
"I told them ?this is you game to win or lose,'" Union Grove head coach Vic Gongola said. "Our bats came alive; we played together. With this team, it's not just one player; it's a team effort. Team chemistry?that's what it's all about."
Starting pitcher Colt Lynn turned in a complete game, striking out three while allowing just three hits and one walk. He also helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
"We knew we what we had to do," Lynn said. "We wanted it and came out to play. It's a great feeling."
Union Grove led 1-0 after the first inning and 3-0 after the third. The Wolverines added one in the fourth and four in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead.
Union Grove batted around in the sixth and put up seven runs to seal the victory. The inning was highlighted by a three-run double by Clint Neville. Neville went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and one run scored.
Four other Union Grove players had multiple hits including Zack Blakeney (2-for-4, two runs, one walk), Greg Brooks (2-for-4, one run, one RBI), Josh Moss (2-for-2, two runs, one RBI and one walk) and Scott Mayo (2-for-3, three runs, one RBI and one walk).
Union Grove racked up 13 hits in the victory.
Gongola expects a tough series in round 2 against Adairsville.
but he's confident his team can do well against the Tigers.
