The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) All-Star baseball game was held Memorial Day Weekend in Augusta's Lake Olmstad Stadium and two Southern Crescent players participated in the contest.
Former Jonesboro High player Zack Maddox and former Henry County High player Lane Hammond played on the Atlanta East, a team which took third place. Maddox played shortstop and Hammond played second base.
Maddox said the All-Star game allowed him to showcase his skills in front of several interested parties. He said that his former high school coach, Don Corr, informed him about the game while Jonesboro was making its state playoff run against the Colquitt County Packers.
"Coach Corr told me that I should tryout for the game and the tryouts were held at Wheeler High in Marietta on May 17," said Maddox. "I made the shortstop position and it was a good opportunity for me."
The Atlanta East won the first game 4-1 last Saturday, lost the second game 3-2 on Sunday and won game three 9-1 on Memorial Day. Maddox had a pretty good series, going 4-for-6 with one run scored, one RBI and one stolen base.
"It was a fun tournament," said Maddox.
"We should've made the championship game, though. We had a lot of talent on the team."
Besides playing with Hammond, whom Maddox described as "an intense type of player," the Atlanta East was comprised of all-star players from Westlake, Lakeside-DeKalb, Northgate, Collins Hill and Southwest DeKalb high schools.
Both Maddox and Hammond are graduating seniors who helped lead their teams to state playoff berths.
Maddox and the Jonesboro Cardinals won in dramatic fashion over the Warner Robins Demons on May 10 to qualify for the state playoffs as the Region 2-AAAAA third seed.
Hammond's strong second half helped propel the Henry Warhawks to a first-place tie in Region 2-AAAAA with the Eagle's Landing Golden Eagles.
Both players' teams lost in first-round state playoff action. Maddox's Cardinals lost their best-of-three series to Colquitt County 2-0; Hammond's Warhawks lost their series to Lowndes 2-1.
