It's been a busy year for new Jonesboro High School Athletics Director Don Corr.
Corr was named AD on April 1, after previous AD Tommy Webb decided to take over the position of head football coach at Fayette County High next fall. Corr also is a guidance counselor at the school as well as head baseball coach.
As the head baseball coach, he led his Cardinals team to their first state playoff berth since 1996. Jonesboro was eliminated in the first round by the Colquitt County Packers 2-0.
Corr took over as AD in the middle of one of the best athletic years ever at Jonesboro. Many of Jonesboro's teams qualified for the state playoffs and several Jonesboro athletes individually qualified for state. The Jonesboro basketball team made it all the way to the state finals, losing to Wheeler.
Can Corr repeat this performance next season, especially with the loss of several talented seniors in their team sports?
"I have some big shoes to fill, but a lot of the same coaching staff will be back and that should help," Corr said. "If the athletes keep working as hard as they did last year, good things should happen."
Corr said that while the senior class will be missed, their legacy on the athletic program should remain intact.
"Our seniors worked their butts off in their respective sports and set the bar here for the younger players," said Corr. "If the younger players work as hard as the seniors did, they should get the job done."
Corr said Webb took care of the majority of the AD duties until the school year ended. Corr said all he did was basically set things in motion for next year.
"My job is to make sure that the athletic program stays at this level in the future," he said. "We'll see by next year this time how well I have performed."
