Mt. Zion got off to a 10-0 lead against Houston County Saturday night at Tara Stadium but the Bears roared back for a 43-17 victory.
Houston County (6-3 overall, 5-3 in Region 2-AAAAA) pounded Mt. Zion for 393 rushing yards, yet no Bear running back crossed the 100-yard plateau.
Houston County quarterback Brandon King led all rushers with 87 yards and two touchdowns. Houston County spread the wealth in its running game as fullback Brandon Lee ran 11 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns, Cedric Hodges gained 64 yards on eight carries and Carlos Brooks added 53 yards and a touchdown. Ronnie Hiley gained 40 yards and scored two touchdowns and Adrian Bakon gained 41 yards for the Bears.
Mt. Zion (6-3, 6-2) scored on its first drive, which ended in a 23-yard field goal by Aubrey Dorsey.
The Bulldogs added to their lead when Emory Clark connected with Chris Coggins on a 61-yard touchdown pass.
Clark completed 7 of 12 passes for 122 yards, throwing one touchdown pass and two interceptions.
Tay Rozier led the Bulldogs in receptions with three for 32 yards.
Houston County scored 36 unanswered points to take a 36-10 lead into the fourth quarter.
Mt. Zion mounted a drive early in the fourth quarter but it looked like it would end when Jarvis Jones intercepted a Clark pass. Jones returned it to about the Mt. Zion 20 but he fumbled and Clark recovered at the Mt. Zion 17.
The Bulldogs then orchestrated a nine-play 83-yard scoring drive that ended on a 17-yard touchdown run by Jory Thomas.
Thomas gained 53 yards on the night. Josh Chapman led Mt. Zion with 56 rushing yards on nine carries. On Mt. Zion's second play of the game, he ran for a 53-yard gain, helping set up a field goal to give Mt. Zion a 3-0 lead.
Mt. Zion managed 136 rushing yards. Coming into Saturday's contest, the Bulldogs averaged 238 rushing yards per game.
