Lovejoy, Mt. Zion hit road tonight for region games

By Anthony Rhoads

Both the Lovejoy Wildcats and Mt. Zion Bulldogs football teams will be playing today on the road.

Lovejoy, the No. 5-ranked team in Class AAAAA travels to play Carver-Columbus and Mt. Zion travels to Warner Robins.

"I like it because it gives our opponents only two days to prepare for our P.E. offense but I don't like it because it gives us only two days to prepare for other team's offenses," Lovejoy head coach Al Hughes said. "I don't like playing at Carver any day, whether it's Thursday, Friday or Saturday."

In counties with shared facilities, teams have to schedule games on Thursday and Saturday. There's no doubt about what day Hughes would rather play on.

"Saturdays are murder," he said. "It's tough on the kids. It's miserable."

Lovejoy takes a 5-0 record into today's Region 4-AAAAA game and is coming off a 47-28 victory over Starr's Mill.

In that game, quarterback Kisan Flakes passed for 286 yards and four touchdown and ran for another score.

Vernard Hoover caught six passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns in the victory at Twelve Oaks Stadium. Lovejoy was also pretty effective running the ball and leading the way was Mark Pettaway with 178 yards.

Carver enters the game at 1-3 and has lost three straight games.

Mt. Zion (4-1) is riding a four-game winning streak going into today's game against Warner Robins.

Mt. Zion beat Eagle's Landing 34-14 Saturday while Warner Robins beat Jonesboro 51-7 last Thursday.
