Lady Cardinals are unbeaten but strive to improve

It's been a perfect season so far for the Jonesboro Lady Cardinals volleyball team.

The Lady Cardinals are currently 20-0 and play at Eagle's Landing today in a pair of Area 2-AAAAA matches against Henry County and Eagle's Landing.

Even though the Lady Cardinals are unbeaten, head coach Dan Maehlman is still pushing his squad to get better.

"It's nice for us to be 20-0, but I'm more concerned with us getting better each play," he said.

The team is coming off a sweep of Lovejoy and North Clayton in non-region action Thursday.

Lovejoy has steadily been improving this year and in its match Thursday against Jonesboro, the Lady Wildcats won the first game 25-17 but lost the match by falling 25-12 and 15-7 in the next two games.

Lovejoy and East Coweta play at Starr's Mill today in Area 4-AAAAA action.

North Clayton and South Atlanta play at Heritage today.

In other volleyball action today, Forest Park plays Salem and McNair at McNair, Riverdale and Mundy's Mill, Mt. Zion plays host to Warner Robins and Stockbridge and Forest Park Christian plays host to Lake Dow.

Tough competition: Jonesboro will have to bring its ?A' game to Eagle's Landing today if the team wants to stay unbeaten.

Eagle's Landing is one of the top teams in Area 2-AAAAA and last Tuesday, the Lady Golden Eagles won a hard-fought match against Morrow.

Eagle's Landing won the region match 25-18, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-20.

"That was an awesome match," Eagle's Landing head coach Christine Ward said. "It was a really tough match."

Region, county match-ups today: In softball, there is a full slate of action today.

In Area 2-AAAAA, Jonesboro plays host to Warner Robins, Westside plays at Mt. Zion and Stockbridge plays at Houston County.

In Area 4-AAAAA, Mundy's Mill plays host to Newnan and Riverdale plays Lovejoy in a county and region match-up.

In Area 4-AAAA, Forest Park plays at Woodward Academy.

Lady Wolverines are No. 6: In this week's gafastpitch.net Class AA state softball poll, the Union Grove Lady Wolverines are ranked sixth.

No other Clayton or Henry schools are ranked but two Fayette teams are rated in Class AAAAA.

Starr's Mill is ranked second and Fayette County is ranked third. Both Starr's Mill and Fayette County are in Area 4-AAAAA.
