Lovejoy soccer rains on Riverdale

The Lovejoy Wildcats boys and girls soccer teams fought through cold, wet and windy conditions to defeat their Region 4-AAAAA rivals, the Riverdale Raiders, Tuesday at Riverdale High.

Lovejoy 8, Riverdale 1 (girls): Brittany Beresford scored three goals to lead the Lovejoy Lady Wildcats to an easy 8-1 victory over the Riverdale Lady Raiders Tuesday afternoon.

Riverdale took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by team captain Veronica Teah, but that was the last lead it would enjoy.

The Lady Wildcats scored six straight goals to take a 6-1 lead at halftime. Beresford, a freshman, scored two first-half goals.

Riverdale defended better in the second half, holding Lovejoy to two goals.

"It feels good to win," said Beresford, who has at least 11 goals scored this year. "I have become better at passing, shooting and dribbling. As a team, we have to work harder in practice and stay focused in the games and we'll be okay."

Lovejoy, a team loaded with freshmen and sophomores, also got goals from Aminah Jones, Kim Joiner, Tiffany Holsey, Kate Hocking and Shoshana Kongphila. Lovejoy improves to 7-6 on the season; Riverdale drops to 5-7-1. Both records are the most wins in school history for either team.

"The girls work hard and they are putting everything together," said Lovejoy head coach Mike Boerstler. "We set our goal at 10 wins this year and we have a good shot to meet that."

Lovejoy 10, Riverdale 2 (boys): Lovejoy midfielder Sanu Sowe scored five goals, helping the Wildcats trounce the Riverdale Raiders 10-2 Tuesday at Riverdale in region play.

Also scoring goals for Lovejoy were Daniel Rich (two goals, one assist), Steven Dolbeer (five assists), Leavell Smith and Anthony Polizzi. Lovejoy improves to 6-5-2 with the victory.

Ahmmed Sunmola, a left-wing midfielder, scored both goals for Riverdale (2-8-1).
