Airport relocates curbside check-in

Staff Reports

Aviation officials have announced plans to temporarily relocate the island curbside check-in counters in front of the South Terminal Hourly Parking deck.

The relocated check-in counters will be repositioned along the third level of the parking facility near the central crosswalks leading into the South Terminal. In addition, a temporary baggage conveyor belt system will be constructed to transport passenger luggage. The installation of the conveyor belt is scheduled to begin Monday with the relocation of the check-in counters to be completed early this summer.

Even though no significant delays are expected, Aviation General Manager Ben DeCosta advises motorists to watch for pedestrians and to remain alert at all times when approaching the terminal building.

"The relocation of the island check-in counters is one of the initial projects associated with the removal of the baggage screening machines located in our ticketing lobbies," said DeCosta.

The project will construct a temporary conveyor belt system that will be routed downward through the parking deck and toward the terminal building. "Any visible portions of the conveyor belt system within the parking facility will be enclosed as a safety and security measure. Barriers will also be strategically placed throughout the impacted area during construction. Passengers and visitors utilizing the handicapped parking spaces on the third level nearest the terminal, will find those parking spaces relocated just east of their previous positions," added DeCosta.

Major construction associated with the Transportation Security Administration's 100 Percent Hold Bag Screening Project that will construct an enclosure and house security screening equipment underneath terminal roadways is scheduled to begin in July.
