Riverdale tries to stay on track at region meet

After winning their fourth straight Clayton County track championship last week, the Riverdale Lady Raiders will be running for the Region 4-AAAAA title this weekend at Starr's Mill.

In last week's county meet, Riverdale's 400 and 1600-meter relay team of Centauria Olds, Morgan Joseph, Nicole Davis and Clemson signee Tia Perry raced to victory.

Other Riverdale winners last week were Amber Thrash in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, Dominique Thurman in the 100-meters, Davis in the triple jump, Joseph in the long jump and Jessika Johnson in the high jump.

Mundy's Mill and Lovejoy will also compete in the Region 4-AAAAA meet.

The Mundy's Mill girls placed second last week at county and two Lady Tigers won events, including Christian Hunnicutt in the discus and Crystal Davis in the 3,200 meters.

Lovejoy placed fifth at county.

The Region 2-AAAAA girls track meet will be held this Saturday and Monday at Stockbridge High School. Local teams competing at the Region 2 meet include Jonesboro, Morrow and Mt. Zion.

Last week at county, Jonesboro had two winners including Meon Simon in the 200 meters and Nisha Jairam in the 1,600 meters.

Morrow and Mt. Zion had one winner each last week including Morrow's Nicola James in the 800 meters and Mt. Zion's Octavia Sawyer in the pole vault.

The North Clayton and Forest Park girls will compete in the Region 4-AAAA meet today and Monday at Woodward Academy.

Last week, North Clayton's Roslyn Ward won the county title in the shot put.

The Region 4-AAAAA boys meet will be held Saturday at Starr's Mill High School.

Last week, the Lovejoy boys won the Clayton County meet. Individual winners from Lovejoy last week were Chris Hail in the long jump, Jeremy Lomax in the discus and Byron Pullins in the 3,200 meters. The Lovejoy 400-meter relay team also won last week.

Riverdale placed third last week and individual events winners were Zack Winters in the 200 meters, Joshua Moss in the 300-meter hurdles and Keena Hudson in the shot put. Hudson also was runner-up in the discus.

Riverdale's 1600-relay team also won last week at county.

The Region 2-AAAAA boys meet will be May 1 and 3 at Tara Stadium.

Last week at county, Morrow was second and several Mustangs won their individual events.

Morrow winners last week included Michael Leftwich in the pole vault, Justin Christian in the 100 meters, Brandon Norman in the 110-meter hurdles and Michael Proctor in the 400 meters.

Mt. Zion had two winners last week including Omar Morrison in the high jump and D'Antonio Rodriguez in the 800 and 1,600 meters.

Forest Park and North Clayton will compete in the Region 4-AAAA May 3 and 4 at Woodward Academy.

Last week, Forest Park finished fifth and North Clayton placed seventh at county.
