Wildcats satisfied with dress rehearsal

By Anthony Rhoads

After the final dress rehearsal before the 2004 football season, Lovejoy head coach Al Hughes feels pretty good about his team.

The Wildcats came away with 19-10 victory over Jonesboro Friday night in a scrimmage at Twelve Oaks Stadium.

"On defense we held them except when we made a couple of bad decisions and they got a few big runs," Hughes said. "On offense, we ran the ball up and down the field. We made some mistakes but it's early and that's going to happen, especially when you've got a new quarterback."

At quarterback, Lovejoy alternated between Ryan Williamson and Darius Thomas. Williamson completed 3-of-10 passes for 56 yards while Thomas completed Thomas completed 4-of-10 passes for 101 yards. Thomas added 13 rushing yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run.

"Both of them did okay but neither one has really stepped up and said ?this is my job,' but they're getting closer," Hughes said.

Chris Hail caught six passes for 93 yards and Octavius Edge led the way in rushing with 83 yards on 12 carries.

"(Edge) is a very special football player," Hughes said. "We're really fortunate to have three or four guys like that."

On defense, Anthony Stanley intercepted a pass in the third quarter. The interception set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Keith Fitzhugh seven plays later.

Jonesboro struggled to get things going on offense for much of the night but quarterback Daniel Casenave had several solid runs. He gained 72 yards on nine carries.

Jonesboro opens the season Friday against Mundy's Mill while Lovejoy plays Mt. Zion Thursday at Tara Stadium.

"We've got to be a lot better before we're ready for Mt. Zion," Hughes said. "We've got a long way to go yet."
