The Modesto Athletics are first place in their half of the California League standings.
Fans of the Oakland Athletics' Class A team can thank former Jonesboro and Georgia Tech star Jason Perry for a large part of the teams success.
Perry, who was reassigned to the team midway through the season, has been one of the California League's hottest hitters.
Through last week's games, Perry has 20 homers, 70 RBIs and a .338 average.
During the team's recent four-game winning streak, Perry drove in seven runs and finished with six doubles.
n Davies still unbeaten: Former Stockbridge baseball standout Kyle Davies hasn't lost since joining the Greenville Braves.
Davies, who started the season with the Myrtle Beach Braves, was promoted to the team's Class AA affiliate earlier this year.
It's didn't take long for Davies to make an impression on his new teammates as he earned Southern League Player of the Week honors after his first start.
He's still on a roll. Davies has compiled a 4-0 record with a 2.57 ERA. He has 63 strikeouts and 20 walks.
In his most recent appearance, Davies left the game without a decision in a contest Greenville dropped to Tennessee 6-2.
The former Southern Crescent High School pitcher of the Year struck out four batters in the loss to Tennessee.
n Wild week for Murton: It's been a wild few days for Matt Murton and his Daytona Beach Cubs teammates.
Because Hurricane Charley did extensive damage to Jackie Robinson Stadium, the home of the Daytona Cubs, just about all of the teams home games have been turned into road games.
It hasn't stopped Murton from continuing to show some offensive power.
Saturday night in a 2-1 loss against St. Lucie, Murton hit a towering home run. It was his first since joining Daytona.
Murton began his second season of professional baseball with the Sarasota Red Sox, but joined the Chicago Cubs' Class A affiliate as part of the Nomar Garciaparra trade.
Since joining Daytona Beach, Murton is batting .283 with the one homer and six RBIs.
