Clayton County police, thinking they were responding to a carjacking, chased a man into Atlanta following a shoplifting incident.
Around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday a man stole a number of razors from a display at the Kroger grocery store on Tara Boulevard near Lovejoy, Clayton County Police Capt. Jeff Turner said. The woman who was working at the display chased him out into the parking lot and to his vehicle, at which point somebody called 911 to report the incident as a carjacking.
A detective on his way to the location saw the suspect's car going north on Tara Boulevard and began the pursuit. The chase ended on Central Avenue in Atlanta near Memorial Drive when the gears of the suspect's car locked up.
Turner said he did not have the suspect's name but said he faces a variety of charges including theft by taking and fleeing from police. However, Turner said that according to the department's policy if they had known the original incident was shoplifting they would not have chased the man.
