Tuesday was a pretty good day for the Fayette County teams in the Henry County Classic basketball tournament.
Both the Fayette County boys and girls advanced to their championship games with a sweep over Lovejoy.
The Fayette County girls play in the championship game today at 7 p.m. against the winner of Forest Park-Lovejoy. The Fayette County boys play today at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of Henry County-Chapel Hill.
The Lovejoy girls play in the third-place game today at 4 p.m. against the Forest Park-Union Grove loser. The Lovejoy boys play today at 5:30 p.m. against the Henry County-Chapel Hill loser.
Fayette County 60, Lovejoy 58 (girls): Lovejoy led for much of the game and held a 43-39 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Fayette County (8-4) finally got the lead with about two minutes to play and held on to win.
Lovejoy led 18-12 at end of the first quarter and 33-27 at the half.
"We played with a little more effort in the second half," Fayette County head coach Edwin Turnipseed said. "I just want them to play hard and give the effort they have given before."
Lovejoy's Britteny Henderson led all scorers with 24 points, 16 of which were in the first half.
"They're a good basketball team," Turnipseed said. "We're going to have to play them two more times this season and this gave us a chance to see what it's going to be like in the region."
Turnipseed, the former head girls' coach is in his first year at Fayette County.
"Things are going good," Turnipseed said. "(Getting to the finals) is good for the girls. This was a good win and gives us some confidence."
Fayette County 65, Lovejoy 48 (boys): Fayette County's Stephen Pleasant led all scorers with 17 points.
Matthew Allen led Lovejoy with 16 and Kevin Lewis chipped in 14.
Lovejoy held a brief 10-8 lead in the first quarter when Ryan Nash scored with about three minutes remaining but Fayette County came back to lead 16-12 going into the second quarter.
Fayette County led 36-21 at the half and 49-38 at the end of the third quarter.
