CCSU teams get back in action today

The Clayton College & State University men's and women's basketball teams will return to the hardwood on Wednesday and Thursday, hosting the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic at the Athletics & Fitness Center.

The Heritage Bank Classic will feature four women's teams and five men's teams in the two-day event.

Along with Clayton State, Carson-Newman College, Miles College and Claflin University will compete in the women's tournament. On the men's side along with host Clayton State, Albany State University, Johnson C. Smith University, the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and the State University of West Georgia will compete in the Classic.

Women's games will tipoff on Wednesday with Carson-Newman, facing Miles in a 1 p.m. contest, followed by Clayton State playing Claflin at 3 p.m.

The men's games on Wednesday will start at 6 p.m. with West Georgia facing J.C. Smith. Clayton State will host UMass-Dartmouth in an 8 p.m. game.

On Thursday, the consolation and championship games of the women's tournament will begin at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.

In the men's draw, West Georgia will play Albany State at 6 p.m., followed by Clayton State facing J.C. Smith at 8 p.m.

The Clayton State women will enter the tournament with a 6-3 record and are coming off a 74-69 loss to West Georgia on Dec. 17, which snapped a four-game winning streak for the team. Junior Jasmine Patterson shined in the loss with a season high 28 points.

Senior Jamika Hindsman leads the Lakers so far this season, averaging a team-leading 16 points per game, followed by senior April Taylor with 13 points and 10 rebounds per contest.

The Laker men are coming off an 86-59 win over Bluefield College, improving its record to 4-7 on the season. Senior Craig Butts had 21 points and six rebounds in the win over Bluefield and leads the team averaging 15 points and nine rebounds per contest. Fellow senior B.J. Puckett is averaging 14 points and eight boards per game.

Admission for the tournament is $5 for adults and children 12-under are free. Clayton State faculty, staff and students are admitted free with their Laker Card.
