A truck driver was killed on I-75 Wednesday when he apparently got out to service his vehicle and was struck by another tractor-trailer, Henry County police said.
The accident happened about 11:30 a.m. on the northbound side of I-75 just south of Ga. Highway 155 in McDonough.
Everett Parker, 65, was killed instantly when a truck driven by Danilo Sanchez, 41, struck him and his rig.
"The truck driver had just pulled over," said Henry County Public Safety Director Michael Turner.
"Unfortunately, the driver was caught in between and killed instantly," he said.
Two lanes of the three-lane interstate were shut down for several hours as authorities investigated the cause of the accident and prepared to move the tractor-trailers.
After striking Parker, Sanchez's truck skidded off the highway and collided with trees on the side of the highway and its trailer flipped over. The trailer contained a load of produce.
Parker's truck appeared to be empty.
Henry County police spokesman Lt. Jason Bolton said investigators were still interviewing Sanchez Wednesday afternoon and trying to determine why he may have run off the road.
"It's still very much in the investigation stage," he said.
The Georgia Department of Transportation recommends motorists stranded on interstate highways get as far to the right side of the highyway and away from traffic as possible and remain in their vehicles until help arrives.
If a motorist experiences a problem, such as a flat tire or other incident, they are encouraged to contact the DOT's Transportation Management Center, which in turn can contact a Highway Emergency Response Operator. HEROs can assist with charging weak batteries, changing tires and other minor emergencies.
To call the Transportation Management Center: Cingular, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile wireless customers can dial *DOT; land line and other wireless carriers can dial 404-635-6080; or call toll-free (888) 635-8287.
