William Neal Marks

William Neal Marks of Jonesboro died Friday afternoon, Jan. 30, 2004, at Emory Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. He had been ill and fought a good fight.

Neal was born Nov. 23, 1954, in Powell and Smith Hospital in Swainsboro, to proud parents Bonnette and Vernon Marks, also of Swainsboro. He was the adored grandson of Cochineal Rich Daniels of Swainsboro for whom he was named and is now deceased, and John William Daniels of Emanuel County who was deceased at the time of his birth and for whom he was also named, and May and Virgil Marks of Marion, Ill., now deceased, but from whom he received his surname and his beautiful black hair. He was big brother to Sharon Marks Manross, and a loved nephew and cousin to family members in Georgia and Illinois.

Neal's devoted wife, Sarah Eileen Marks, who had fought the fight of his illness at his side, was with him, as well as his parents, two of his daughters, his sister, aunt, nieces, nephew and numerous other family members and friends at the time of his passing from this life to eternal life. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Eileen Marks; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Marks; four children, John Courtney Marks, Raven Nicole Marks, Trisha Diane Marks and Brittany Danielle Marks; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Lynn Rule and Brandi Cheri Stevens; and sister, Sharon Marks Manross, as well as seven grandchildren and many aunts, uncles and cousins, and Sonny Dart Barton, a special friend who Neal was privileged to be a father figure to.

Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 2, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. Dr. George Worrell and the Rev. Hinton Harris will officiate. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.

Vera Laudis Turner Hatcher

Vera Laudis Turner Hatcher, 77, of Jonesboro, died Jan. 31, 2004. Surviving are sons Gary Hatcher, Darryl Hatcher; sisters Lautrell Anderson, Lyndall Hightower, Larraine McCleskey; sister-in-law Ann Turner; four grandchildren; step-grandchild Chessy Gaylor.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

James Thurman Starr

James Thurman Starr of Jonesboro died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, after a short illness. He was preceded in death by daughter Jane and son Bob. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Hattie Lee; brothers Harold and Terrell Starr; daughter-in-law Janet; grandchildren Tracy and Mike, Michelle, Lisa and Joey, Leslie and Scott; great-grandchildren Dusty, Amanda, Alex, Matthew, Dylan, Victoria, Hannah, Rebecca; sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews.

Starr was retired from Auto Soler. He was a 50-year member of Forest Park Masonic Lodge and a lifelong member of Mt. Zion First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Hollen Dixon

Hollen Dixon of Forest Park died Jan. 30, 2004. He was a retired truck driver and Clayton County bus driver. He was a member of the Rex Masonic Lodge.

Dixon is survived by his wife, Rosie Dixon; son Al Shoemaker-Dixon of Cleveland, Ga.; daughters Sheryl Sanford of Forest Park and Debbie Addison of Forest Park; grandchildren Shelby Love, Kristy Ward, Jason Sikes and Keli Sikes; great-grandchild Travis Love; sisters and brothers-in-law Carolyn and Lamar Durham of Conley, Judy Gail and James Farmer of Savannah; and sister-in-law Carrie Dixon of Forest Park.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday and Wednesday from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
