The Kendrick Middle School boys basketball team tried to make it an all-Kendrick finals Monday night, but the Mundy's Mill Razorbacks had other ideas.
Rashad Jones scored 10 points, including a pressure jump shot and a big free throw, to help the Razorbacks defeat the Kendrick Comets 68-66 in overtime of the Clayton County Middle School Basketball Semi-finals at Mundy's Mill High.
Mundy's Mill advances to the Middle School Finals Thursday night against Riverdale Middle School. In earlier action, the Kendrick Lady Comets defeated Morrow Middle's girls to advance to the finals.
Mundy's Mill sprinted to a six-point first-half lead, thanks to great play from point guard Todd Salter. Salter pushed the ball and got it to his teammates for easy baskets as the Razorbacks pushed their lead to 10 points at one point.
Kendrick stormed back in the second half, behind strong play from post players Cordy Glenn and Jarius Brown. With less than three minutes in regulation, Kendrick tied the game at 43 and took its first lead of the contest at 45-43 on a layup by Deanthony Moses.
The lead switched hands during the final minutes. Kendrick took a 59-54 lead and looked to ice the game, but Mundy's Mill's Ronnie Weston nailed a 3-pointer to cut it to 59-57 and that sparked the Razorbacks to tie the game at 59.
Kendrick's Brandon Hosley sank two free throws to give the Comets a 61-59 lead with 30 seconds left. Weston brought the ball up the court and found Jones, who nailed a jumper just inside the 3-point line with five seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 61.
Kendrick scored the first four points of overtime to lead 65-61, but Mundy's Mill embarked on a 7-1 run, getting clutch rebounds and putbacks, to win the game.
