Senate passes Bright from the Start

By Greg Gelpi

The Georgia Senate unanimously approved Gov. Sonny Perdue's "Bright from the Start, Georgia's Office of Early Care and Education" legislation Tuesday.

The bill renames the state Office of School Readiness to Bright from the Start, establishing it as a separate entity with its own budget.

The new office would oversee and regulate early care and education programs.

"With the passage of the legislation, we are one step closer to preparing our toddlers for a future of learning," Perdue said.

"By consolidating state resources under the newly created office, Bright from the Start, we will be able to infuse more educational value into childcare and pre-k programs."

Senate Bill 456 must now be considered by the Georgia House of Representatives.

The bill is part of Perdue's complete legislative package on education, which includes school discipline and flexibility and accountability.
