TYRONE ? The North Clayton boys destroyed Pebblebrook 80-31 in first round action of the Region 4-AAAA tournament Tuesday night at Sandy Creek High School.
North Clayton advances to play Chapel Hill Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Chapel Hill advanced to round 2 by beating Woodward Tuesday.
"We split with them in the regular season," North Clayton head coach Steve Cole said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge and I think my players are too."
North Clayton (19-6) had little trouble with Pebblebrook. Pebblebrook led 6-1 early in the first quarter but North Clayton dominated the rest of the contest.
North Clayton then went on an 18-2 run to take a 19-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. North Clayton outscored the Falcons 26-10 in the second quarter and led 45-18 at the half.
The Eagles extended their lead to 58-27 at the end of the third. In the fourth quarter, North Clayton outscored Pebblebrook 22-4.
"We've been playing really well at the end of the season," Cole said. "We came out ready to play tonight and played really well. Hopefully, that will carry over Thursday."
North Clayton had a balanced scoring attack will all but two players scoring.
Jonathan Bolston led North Clayton with 12 points while Vincent Wood scored 10. Jamal Bowers added nine points.
Prentiss Groom led Pebblebrook with 10 points.
n Northgate 48, Forest Park 45: The Forest Park Panthers' season came to an end Tuesday night with a 48-45 loss to the Northgate Vikings.
Forest Park (9-16) played Northgate close throughout the contest but its only lead came when Anthony Harvey made a basket to give the Panthers a 45-43 lead with 3:36 remaining in the game. Northgate's Donte Jones tied it at 45-45 and with 13.8 points remaining, Demarcus Render gave the Vikings a 46-45 lead when he made a free throw.
With about six seconds remaining, Harvey made a steal for Forest Park and was fouled. Harvey missed his two free throws.
With about four seconds remaining, Joseph Adams made two free throws to seal the victory for Northgate.
Harvey led all scorers with 19 points and Randy Jackson added nine for Forest Park.
Demarcus Render led Northgate with 14 while Demetrius Render added 12. Jones and Adams added nine each for the Vikings (8-18).
Forest Park had beaten Northgate twice during the regular season.
Northgate plays Thursday at 8:30 p.m. against either Sandy Creek or Alexander, who were playing in the late game Tuesday night.
