Clanton to start 30th

From staff reports

Jonesboro native Joey Clanton will be starting in 30th place in today's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Dodge Dealers 250 at the Dayton International Speedway.

Clanton qualified 30th Wednesday with a speed of 179.244 mph.

Today's race will be on the Speed Channel at 8 p.m.

Clanton recently signed on with Virginia-based Key Motorsports to drive the No. 40 Key Motorsports Chevrolet for the 2004 season in one of the top divisions in stock-car racing.

"I couldn't have picked a better group to team with for my first year in the series. With my past experience in Late Models, ASA, and both of our involvements in the Busch Series, we bring the experience needed to win not only races but also a championship," Clanton said.

Curtis Key, owner of the No. 40 truck, also carries the optimism and confidence to Daytona.

"We are very excited to have Joey as our driver. He is a working driver so he not only has proven driving experience but knows how to work on the truck as well," said Key.

Clanton competed in 18 NASCAR Busch Series events for Brewco Motorsports last season, posting one top-five finish. Clanton was one of the top rookies last year but he and Brewco parted ways before the end of the season.

From 2000-02, Clanton was one of the most dominant driver in the American Speed Association, one of the premier short-track leagues in the country. In 2000, Clanton was the 2000 ASA rookie of the year and was third in the national points standings in 2001.

Clanton won nine races in 2002 and ended the season by winning ASA national points championship.

The son of dirt-track racer Billy Clanton, he grew up around the tracks and began racing at local tracks in Georgia and Alabama.

Clanton graduated from Georgia Tech with a mechanical engineering degree and after college, he raced in Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thursday Thunder summer series and Lowe's Motor Speedway's Summer Shootout series.
