The Jonesboro Cardinals varsity boys' soccer team opened the 2004 season Tuesday with a 5-1 victory over county rival Morrow on a chilly and damp night in game played in Jonesboro's own backyard.
Jonesboro built a 4-0 lead at the half.
The Cardinals opened the scoring just two minutes into the game when senior Brad Martin passed the ball over to Ryan Chaffee for the first goal of the season.
Five minutes later, Jonesboro increased the lead to 2-0 when freshman Cameron Black scored on an unassisted goal for the Cardinals.
Jonesboro added to its total when Martin collected his second assist of the game by hooking up with Fabian Moreila Mesa 37 minutes into the game for a 3-0 lead.
Black scored his second goal of the game and closed out the first-half scoring when he booted the ball into the back of the net at the 40th minute of the game. The goal sent the Cardinals into the halftime break in front 4-0.
Jonesboro converted a free kick into its fifth goal of the game at the 53rd minute of the game when Chaffee added his second goal of the game on a score from 25-yards out.
Morrow scored its only goal of the game about six minutes later when Alex Ponce prevented a shutout.
"They played well for the first game of the season," said first-year Jonesboro head coach Andy Boyle. "We still have things to work on. I was impressed with the freshman. Brad (Martin) played well. David Fleming played well in goal."
Jonesboro girls junior varsity wins: The Lady Cardinals j.v. squad beat Mundy's Mill 5-0.
Lindley Curtis led the way with three goals with one assist. Jessica Duron and Amber Nettles scored one goal each. Nettles added one assist and Allison Vandiver recorded one assist.
Jonesboro goalkeeper Tiffany Myers had three saves and she saved one penalty kick.
