Mrs. Margery Middlebrooks-Butler of Barnesville passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 23, 1910, in Monroe County, Ga., daughter of the late Gary Goggans and the late Lula Willis Goggans. She was retired vice president and co-founder of the Clayton County Savings & Loan Association. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Barnesville. She was instrumental in instituting the Clayton County Historical Society with special permission from Margaret Mitchell's brother and received the Georgia Woman of the Year Award for instituting Clayton County as home of "Gone With the Wind." She was very proud of her grandson, who is director of the Division of Psychosocial Rehabilitation at Atlantic Shores Healthcare South Florida State Hospital.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Clarence E. Middlebrooks Sr. and Lee Otis Butler Sr.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Clarence Eugene Middlebrooks Jr. and Ruby of Lake Mary, Fla.; grandson, Mark Eugene Middlebrooks of Miami, Fla.; brother, Frank Goggans of Barnesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Margery Middlebrooks-Butler will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Barnesville. The Rev. Franklin Gibson will officiate. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville. Friends visited the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the funeral home. She will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Barnesville, GA 30204, or the Clayton County Historical Society in memory of Mrs. Butler.
