The Lovejoy Wildcats boys basketball team will be looking to get a little payback in Region 4-AAAAA action as they host the Fayette County Tigers tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Lovejoy, the No. 15 team in AAAAA, is 12-4 and 7-1 in Region 4-AAAAA, with the Tigers responsible for the Wildcats' only region loss. The Wildcats have started the new year undefeated in region play and hope to add Fayette to that streak. Fayette has been pretty good the last couple of years, so Lovejoy will be in for a battle tonight.
Another county team that will be in for a battle will be the Jonesboro Cardinals (10-4, 5-3), who will face their second state-ranked team in a week as they host the Warner Robins Demons (10-3, 7-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Jonesboro, the No. 14 team in AAAAA, will have to work hard to defeat the No. 13 Demons. Warner Robins is good enough to have given Stockbridge its only loss so far and Stockbridge defeated Jonesboro by 12 last Tuesday (even though the Cardinals played short-handed).
The Cardinals will probably look forward to facing another Region 2-AAAAA team from Houston County as opposed to playing teams from neighboring Henry County. Jonesboro rebounded from losses to No. 6 Stockbridge and unranked Henry County last Tuesday and Friday, respectively, to defeat Northside-Warner Robins last Saturday.
The Morrow Mustangs had their two-game Region 2-AAAAA winning streak broken by the Henry County Warhawks last Saturday and look to bounce back with a win over Northside tonight at 7:30 p.m. Northside is having a down year this season, so the Mustangs should be able to get back on track.
Omar Stephens has been lighting it up for Morrow, scoring 20-plus points in the Mustangs' last two games.
Other games on the schedule tonight include Northgate at Forest Park, Mt. Zion at Houston County, Mundy's Mill at East Coweta, Douglas County at North Clayton and McIntosh at Riverdale.
State rankings: The new basketball state rankings came out Monday night and Southern Crescent teams are still included, albeit with some shuffling involved. The Jonesboro girls gone from 4th to 6th and the Riverdale girls have moved from eighth to 10th. The Jonesboro boys went from 7th to 14th while the Lovejoy boys moved from 10th to 15th. The only area team to move up was the Stockbridge boys (8th to 6th).
