Several Clayton County high schools won region road games Saturday night.
Jonesboro 60, Houston County 58 (girls): Shade' Smith led four Lady Cardinals in double figures with 22 points as Jonesboro rebounded from its first region loss to defeat the Houston County Lady Bears on the road Saturday night.
Kala Smith and Jawanda Duffey added 13 points for Jonesboro (16-2, 10-1 in Region 2-AAAAA), who played well after suffering a loss to Morrow on Friday night.
Duffey, who suffered a busted lip in Friday's loss, played well against Houston County - she snagged eight rebounds and also had four assists.
The game was close all night and the outcome wasn't decided until the final minutes. The Lady Cardinals made their free throws down the stretch, with Sheena Brown (10 points, 10 rebounds) sinking 8-of-8 in the fourth quarter.
"I'm glad we were able to bounce back from such a tough loss," said Jonesboro head coach John Kovzel. "We needed that win."
Jonesboro is now off until Jan. 23 when they host Mt. Zion.
Jonesboro 65, Houston County 60 (boys): Toney Douglas scored 45 points, including eight 3-pointers, to lead the Cardinals to a 65-60 victory over the Houston County Bears on the road Saturday.
Jonesboro led 35-32 at the half and actually led most of the night against a tough Bears team. Jamal Lewis added six points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal for Jonesboro.
Lovejoy 66, Starr's Mill 53 (boys): Derek Brooks scored 22 points and Michael Sloan added 20 as the Lovejoy Wildcats defeated Region 4-AAAAA foe Starr's Mill on the road Saturday night.
Lovejoy improves to 14-4 on the season.
