The man who shot an Atlanta police officer during a traffic stop and who was fatally shot in return was driving a car stolen out of Clayton County. Around 12:24 p.m. Wednesday Atlanta police Senior Officer Terry Stephens and Officer Thomas Munson stopped a late-model Ford Taurus on Dill Avenue in southwest Atlanta, Atlanta Police Sgt. John Quigley said. Stephens briefly searched the suspect, whose name Quigley did not release, and put in the back of a patrol car without any handcuffs on. The man then took out a gun that had been hidden in his layers of clothes and shot Stephens in the shoulder. Munson then fired into the patrol car and killed the suspect. Stephens, a 13?-year-veteran of the force, was expected to recover from his wounds. An unidentified woman who was a passenger in the Taurus was taken into custody, Quigley said. The Taurus had been taken in a Jan. 9 carjacking in Clayton County, Quigley said.More like this story
