With two full weeks remaining in the regular season of high school basketball, teams are starting to jockey for playoff position.
Tonight's marquee game belongs to the North Clayton Lady Eagles, who make the trip to Fayette County to face the Sandy Creek Lady Patriots in Region 4-AAAA action. Game time begins at 6 p.m.
North Clayton (15-5, 14-1 in the region) will be looking for a little payback against Sandy Creek, the team that put the only blemish on the Lady Eagles' region record. Sandy Creek (13-8, 12-2) escaped College Park with a 37-35 victory in December.
"They came in our house and got us in overtime. We had four of our key players foul out in that game," said Lady Eagles head coach Kimleon Turner. "I'm hoping we can stay in the game this time."
Turner said he's pleased with how his team is playing. The 10th-ranked Lady Eagles have won seven straight games and can stay on top of the region standings, along with Woodward Academy, with a road victory. North Clayton has scored 60-plus points in four of their last five games, all blowouts.
The Morrow boys team will face another ranked region foe from Henry County, as the Mustangs travel to face the 12th-ranked Henry County Warhawks tonight. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. Last Friday, Morrow made a valiant comeback effort in the second half, but lost to No. 5 Stockbridge at home.
Lovejoy, at 15-5 and ranked 12th, will try to gain ground on idle Riverdale with a victory over Region 4-AAAAA foe Carver-Columbus tonight. All three teams are at the top of the region standings.
Jonesboro will look to get back into the rankings as the Cardinals travel to play Westside-Macon. The Jonesboro Lady Cardinals, ranked 15th, are also looking to get back into the win column after losing at home to Mt. Zion last Friday.
Other games on tap for tonight include Pebblebrook at Forest Park, Warner Robins at Mt. Zion, Mundy's Mill at Starr's Mill, Union Grove at Blessed Trinity, Northside-Warner Robins at Eagle's Landing and Riverside Military at Eagle's Landing Christian Academy. All games start at 6 p.m.
State Rankings: The new state basketball polls have come out on gabasketballnet.com. Stockbridge has moved from 7th to 5th, while Lovejoy and Henry County are tied at 12th. For the girls, Riverdale moves from 14th to 11th, North Clayton remains at 10th and Jonesboro drops from 8th to 15th.
