Starting today, the Southern Crescent will play host to several American Amateur Baseball Congress regional tournaments.
Here is a glance at the tournaments:
The Sandy Koufax (13-14) Southeast Regional Tournament is being held at Morrow-Lake City Park.
Play begins today with the Gresham Park Tigers against the Colonial Heights (Kingsport, Tenn.) Rebels at 9 a.m. The Gresham Park Giants play the Memphis Tigers at 11:15 a.m., the Panhandle Hurricanes play the Locust Grove SwampDragons at 1:30 p.m. and the Daniel Boone (Tenn.) Blazers will take on the Riverdale Knights.
Losers' bracket games will be held at 6:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Locust Grove enters the tournament after finishing third in the state tournament last week.
"It was a long hard battle and we felt like we earned a spot," Locust Grove coach Barry Wilkerson said.
Riverdale will be the host team in the regional tournament.
"It's an outstanding opportunity for our boys and we're looking forward to the competition," Riverdale coach Barry Thomas said.
The winner of the Southeast Regional advances to the Sandy Koufax World Series, held July 29-Aug. 1 in Rockford, Ill.
The Pee Wee Reese (11-12) Southeast Regional is being held at Forest Park.
The first round begins today at 6 p.m. with the Volunteer (Tenn.) Falcons playing the Central DeKalb Cobras on field one and the Colonial Heights (Kingsport, Tenn.) Rebels playing the Gresham Park Mustangs on field two.
The 8 p.m. games include the Boyd County (Ken.) Reds playing the Gresham Park A's on field one and the Hall's (Tenn.) Mudcats playing the Forest Park A's on field two.
The winner of the Southeast Regional advances to the Pee Wee Reese World Series, held Aug. 5-8 in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.
The Roberto Clemente (7-8) Southeast Regional Tournament is being held today-Sunday at Richard Craig Park in McDonough.
McDonough will also play host to the Roberto Clemente World Series, starting next Thursday.
The Mickey Mantle (15-16) State Tournament is going on at Fayette County High School.
The Morrow-Lake City Chargers is still alive in the tournament and play today at 8 p.m.
The Chargers won the district tournament at Henry County High School to advance to the state tournament.
Some offensive standouts for the Chargers so far have been Vince Quattrochi and Blake Burrell. Pitching standouts have been Brandon Rice with three wins and Hunter Strickland, who has been perfect in relief.
The winner of the state tournament advances to the Southeast Regional Tournament, which will be held next week at Hunter Park in Douglasville.
The regional tournament winner advances to the Mickey Mantle World Series, held Aug. 4-8 in McKinney, Texas.
