Board to accept input on budget, review SPLOST

By Greg Gelpi

The Clayton County Board of Education will meet at 3 this afternoon for a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax workshop. The board will hold a regular business meeting at 7 tonight with an executive session preceding at 6:30 p.m.

The school board will also receive input on its proposed fiscal year 2005 budget at a 6 p.m. meeting and later vote on a tentative budget at its regular board meeting.

The board will consider accepting the contracts for administrators in the school system as well as consider approving nominations for senior level positions at its regular business meeting.

The board is slated to take action on nominations to fill the positions of Jonesboro High School principal, Elementary School No. 9 principal, Kemp Primary School principal, coordinator of public affairs and community relations, director of classified personnel and director of certified personnel.

Five of the school system's 10 assistant superintendents along with other senior administrators have retired or left the school system in the past two months.

The workshop will cover updates on the previous three-year SPLOST, the current five-year SPLOST and the proposed new five-year SPLOST. The current 1-cent sales tax expires in December, but a new one would need to be approved in the fall in order to avoid an interruption in tax collections.

The workshop and meetings will be at the Administrative Complex, 1058 Fifth Ave., Jonesboro.
