Head-on collision kills Rex woman, one other

By Ed Brock

A Rex woman who was driving the wrong way on the interstate in Atlanta caused an accident that killed her and a Smyrna woman.

Cynthia Howse, 47, was driving her 1991 Geo Prism south in the northbound lanes of I-75/85 just south of Capitol Avenue around 12:47 a.m. Thursday when she collided with a 1992 Honda Civic driven by 19-year-old Dequivus Hall of Riverdale, Atlanta police Sgt. Kevin Iosty said.

Hall suffered only minor injuries but a passenger in his car, 18-year-old Venita Evans, was killed along with Howse. Dennis Moore, another passenger in Hall's car, suffered serious injuries.

Howse's car spun out of control after the initial impact and hit a 1990 Honda Accord driven by David Akinjide, 37, of Washington, D.C. Akinjide also suffered only minor injuries.

Iosty said police did not know how long Howse had been driving in the northbound lanes and, while they have sent blood samples to be tested for alcohol content, they do not know if she was impaired.

"There were no obvious signs," Iosty said.
