James Bowers

James Bowers, 65, of Riverdale, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2004.

Funeral services took place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 23 at Pope Dickson & Son Jonesboro Chapel, with Dr. Warren Taylor officiating. Interment followed at Sherwood Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Bowers; son, Stewart; daughter, Terry; stepson, Marty; stepdaughters, Sonda, Connie and Myra; six grandchildren.

CW4 Gene Autry Jackson


CW4 Gene Autry Jackson was born July 8, 1940, in Canton, Miss. to Mr. Robert Henderson Sr. of Gary Ind.; mother, Jimmie Lee Nichols (deceased), and a stepmother, Mrs. Nona Henderson of Gary, Ind. Gene accepted Christ at an early age.

He departed this life Sunday, June 27, 2004, at his home.

Mr. Jackson retired from the United States Army with 30 years of service. He fought in the Vietnam War, Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Desert Storm. He received two Bronze Stars, the Merit of Service Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Parachute Badge, Support Staff Maintenance Senior Warrant Officer Course, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon Medal, Vietnam Civilian Action Honor Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Service Star. After retiring from the Army, Gene worked for Lear Siegler Service in Fayetteville, Ga. He was H.I.R.P. Project Manager.

Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 3 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Jonesboro. Mr. Jackson will lie in state at the church from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Survivors include a loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Era Jackson; son, Mr. Charles Jackson; daughter, Jacquelyn Washington Powell (Rodney); chosen son and nephew, Carl Herron (Keisha); chosen son, Wilson Washington (Chelsy); sisters, Mrs. Florine Horn (deceased), Mrs. Alice Carson (Jimmy), Mrs. Jimmy Ann Adams (Cedric), Mrs. Eloise Hemphill (James), and Regina Nichols, all of Jackson, Miss., Ms. Mary Battle and Ms. Mattie Walker, both of Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Deborah Ford of Elkton, Md.; brothers, Mr. William Jackson (deceased) and Mr. Robert Henderson Jr. of Gary, Ind.; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law from Oklahoma, Mississippi, Texas and Kansas; and a whole host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 1 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 2.

The burial will take place Tuesday, July 6 at the Main Post Cemetery at Fort Benning, Fort Benning, Ga.
