Lovejoy boys tennis team shocks J-boro

With its past success, the Jonesboro Cardinals boys tennis team is the measuring stick for many of the programs in the county.

After what happened on the court Wednesday afternoon., the Lovejoy squad must feel as if it's closed the gap as it shocked the Cardinals 5-0.

"We have all the respect in the world for the Jonesboro tennis team, so to beat them was a lot of fun," said Lovejoy coach Mike Maddox. "It was a lot of fun."

In singles, the Lovejoy squad picked up wins from Kimleon Turner (9-7), Chris Cook (9-8 (7-4 tiebreaker), and Darnell Turnipseed (8-5).

In doubles, the Wildcats picked up win s from Sheldon Valentine and Jarrett Turnipseed (8-0) and Garry Adams and Chris Miller (8-5).

The Jonesboro girls tennis teambeat Lovejoy 3-2. Lauren McMilliam (8-3), Sara Buttrram (8-3) and the doubles team of Jacinta Nguyen and Joan Nguyen (8-3) won their matches.

Baseball

Flying high: The Jonesboro Cardinals baseball team is off to one of its best starts in recent years after beginning the season with a 5-0 record and a 2-0 mark in Region 2-AAAAA competition.

Head coach Don Corr's 2004 team has a mix of seniors (7), juniors (7), sophomores (4), and freshman (1).

Corr's club has sent a message to the rest of Region 2-AAAAA by winning two league games on the road.

That has given the Cardinals and early boost of confidence.

"This philosophy we have is we have to win so many games down south on the road, and take care of business up here and we are going to get in (the playoffs).

Track

Racing to victory: On Tuesday the Mundy's Mill Lady Tigers Track team defeated Eagle's Landing 72-59. Janel Wheeler took first in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles and took third in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashRenika Ezell took first in the 400-meter. Kateisha Dowell took first in the shot put and third in the discus. Christian Hunnicutt took first in the high jump and discus and Ladaie Onikoyi took first in the triple jump and second in the 800-meter.

The 4x100 Orange team and the 4x400 Blue team both took first in relay events.

In Boys action, Darroll Naylor took first in the triple jump and second the 200-meter. Robbie Gordon took second in the discus, Vladamir Murad took second in the shot put and Antione Lee took

first in the 800-meter and second in the 400-meter.
