A healthy dose of math plus science equals students who can compete among the best E. W. Oliver Elementary is holding a math bowl to make sure its students can compete. "What we're trying to do is make our kids the most competitive on earth," Principal Ronald Boykins said. "What we try to do is a lot to make our kids competitive in math and science." He said there are many competitions for basketball and football, but he is trying to introduce students to academic competitions as well. "You have to see it," Boykins said. "When you come and see it, it's a whole new perspective." Kindergartners and first-graders competed Thursday night, second and third grades will compete at 6:45 tonight and fourth and fifth grades will compete at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Oliver is a math and science-themed school, Boykins said, and is the "only advanced placed program for math" for elementary schools in the state.More like this story
